Tell us about the piece or the room

A short, clear description saves a lot of back and forth. Note the rough dimensions, the condition of what is already there, and the timber direction you have in mind. If the job needs eyes on site, tick the box and we will work the visit into the schedule.

Submitting this form sends your details to the workshop and takes you to a confirmation page. Nothing is booked or reserved at this point.

Before you send the first message

A short brief saves a lot of back-and-forth at the bench. You do not need everything below to start a conversation, but the more you can tell us, the faster we can say whether the job suits the workshop and what the next step looks like.

Dimensions and the space

Rough width, height and depth are enough to begin. For built-in cupboards and kitchen islands, note ceiling height, door swings and how much clearance you want around the unit. If a wall runs out of square, say so, because we scribe on site rather than assume.

Timber and finish

We work mainly in oak, ash and reclaimed Oregon pine. Tell us if you already have a direction, or if you want to see what is on the running stock list before deciding. Finish matters too: hardwax oil, food-safe oil for working tops, or a painted back panel.

Condition of the piece

For restoration work, describe what has failed: a split top, loose joints, old repairs, water marks, missing sections. Photos of the damage and of the whole piece help us judge whether repair is realistic or whether replacement parts are the honest answer.

Photos that actually help

A wide shot of the room or the piece, plus one or two close-ups of the problem area. Include the floor and ceiling in the frame for fitted work, and stand back far enough that we can see how the unit sits against the walls.

Site visit across Gauteng

Most jobs start with a site visit, and it is not always necessary. If the piece is small or the space is straightforward, we can often work from measurements and photos. Flag it in your message if you would like us to come out.

What you want to end up with

Say plainly what the finished piece should do: storage that closes softly, a counter that takes daily trade, a table that stays usable without erasing its history. That intent shapes the joints and the finish more than any style reference.

Limits worth knowing up front

The workshop is run by three cabinetmakers who split their time between client commissions and small production runs, so not every job can be taken on at once. We work in solid timber and reclaimed stock, which means grain and colour vary from board to board, and some pieces carry marks that no amount of planing will remove. If a repair would compromise the structure, we will say so rather than patch it over. Saturday hand-tool sessions are capped at six people, so a place is only held once we confirm it.

Where to find the workshop

The studio address below is a contact and postal address for Tycoon Workshop. It is not a shop, showroom or collection point, and we do not describe parking, entrances or drop-in visits here. Use it to send drawings, timber samples or written notes, or to reach the three cabinetmakers by phone and email before a commission starts.

Most enquiries begin with a short description of the room or the piece, the timber you have in mind, and whether the job needs a site visit across Gauteng. From there the work moves to the bench for milling, jointing and finishing. If you are unsure which route fits, mention it in your message and we will point you to the right one.

Area covered

Site visits are arranged across Gauteng, and the studio works mainly in oak, ash and reclaimed Oregon pine. The map below shows the wider Johannesburg area around the contact address, so you can place the studio in relation to your own suburb before you write.

Coordinates shown cover the Johannesburg area within roughly 27.97 to 28.12 longitude and -26.18 to -26.06 latitude. The address itself is a postal and contact point, not a workshop you can walk into.

Reach the bench

Talk to the cabinetmakers about a commission, a repair, or a place in a Saturday session. It helps to know the room or the piece, the timber you have in mind, and whether the job needs eyes on site.

Tycoon Workshop is run by three cabinetmakers who move between client work and small production runs. Most enquiries start with a description of the space or the furniture, then a site visit across Gauteng if the piece or the room calls for it. Built-in cupboards, kitchen islands, shopfitting counters and older solid-wood furniture all come through the same door.

If you already know the timber, say so. Oak, ash and reclaimed Oregon pine are the three we work in most, and the running stock list on the site shows what is on hand before you commit to a direction. For restoration work, a few clear photos of the joints, the finish and any old repairs save a lot of guessing.
