What partners get from the bench

Tycoon Workshop is three cabinetmakers in Johannesburg who split their week between client commissions and small production runs. That mix shapes how we work with the people around us, and what it means for you.

Tycoon Workshop: partners

Timber you can check first

Oak, ash and reclaimed Oregon pine sit on a running stock list on the site. You see what is actually on hand before a commission is agreed, so material choices start from real boards rather than a catalogue.

A site visit before the bench

Most jobs begin with a visit across Gauteng. You walk the space with us, look at the stock and the bench, and we talk through the piece before anything is cut. Awkward walls and tight openings get measured where they are.

Joinery that lands square

For fitted cupboards and shopfitting counters we coordinate with whoever is handling the surrounding fit-out. Openings, service gaps and cable runs get agreed early, so the timber goes in clean instead of being trimmed on site.

Restoration over replacement

Inherited solid-wood furniture often needs repair, not a new piece. We rejoint, patch with matching timber and finish thin, so the wear and history of the table or chair stays visible rather than being sanded away.

The bench shared with beginners

Saturday morning hand-tool sessions stay capped at six people, working on offcuts from current commissions. It keeps the studio connected to the wider Johannesburg woodworking community, and it keeps our own hand skills honest.

What the bench takes on

Partnerships at Tycoon Workshop sit close to the bench. Three cabinetmakers share the work between client commissions and short production runs, and the people around them — timber suppliers, clients, the trades handling the surrounding fit-out — shape what actually gets built. Here is what we take on, and who it tends to suit.

Working mainly in oak, ash and reclaimed Oregon pine. The stock list on the site shows what is on hand before you book.

  • Built-in cupboards

Fitted runs for bedrooms, passages and studies. Suits rooms with uneven plaster, dropped ceilings or old brick walls, where every carcass gets scribed on site before doors are hung.

  • Kitchen islands

Freestanding islands sized around the walkways you already have. A working surface first, with seating clearance and service gaps planned before the frame is glued up.

  • Shopfitting counters

Service counters for coffee bars and small retail spaces, built heavier than domestic units. We coordinate with whoever is handling the surrounding fit-out so the joinery lands square in the opening.

  • Furniture restoration

Repair work on older solid-wood pieces — split tops, loose legs, joints that were fixed badly years ago. Repair over replacement, with the wear left visible where the owner wants it kept.

  • Saturday hand-tool sessions

A morning at the bench for beginners, capped at six people so everyone gets time at the sharpening stone. We work on offcuts from current commissions, so the timber changes from week to week. No prior experience needed.

Most jobs begin with a site visit across Gauteng, then move to the bench. If you want the full picture of how a commission runs, the workshop process walks through it step by step, and the service list sets out each type of work in more detail.
